Thankful Thursday

Perhaps it is the season of Thanksgiving upon us, or perhaps it is related to particular scriptures that I have been dwelling on of late that I am drawn to the concept of thankfulness.  Last week I considered the idea of hosting a "Thankful Thursday" party on my blog through the month of November to prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday.  I considered it for a few days and decided chickened out--plain and simple.  But, the idea continued nagging at my heart through the weekend.

I am, in fact, hosting my Thankful Thursday party on this blog for the next three Thursdays.  My change of heart came Sunday during our Sunday school class.  We are finishing up a James McDonald series on the book of Colossians.  In chapter 4 verse 2 (the first verse we started with last Sunday) says this:
"Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a THANKFUL heart."
For some reason, that made the decision in my heart to dedicate some posts on Thanksgiving. .the REAL kind.
I tried to search out how many times the bible advises us to be thankful or to give thanks.  The answer I found was A LOT.  There are multiple phrases used to mean the same thing. .Giving thanks, thanksgiving, thankfulness, grateful etc.  So at least well over 200 times we are instructed to be thankful or give thanks.  In Ephesians 5:20 Paul advises us "And you will always give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."
And Psalms 107:1 and 118:1 and 118:29 tell us to
"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever."

Today, I am especially thankful for technology.  I find it fascinating that I can search for ANYTHING I could ever want to find. .a particular scripture verse-or the ability to dive deeper into the meaning of a scripture, a recipe, or even old friends. .and have instant knowledge at my fingertips.  I think it is an excellent resource for drawing support and inspiration. .for expanding our minds. .for allowing us to reach out to others. . and is a great way to connect with loved ones far away or with people sharing similar interests or conflicts.  It has helped me create relationships with new friends that I have never met, helped me catch up with old friends that I had lost track of, and assisted me in keeping family and friends updated on the big and little things in my own life.  Granted, as with anything else, technology can be a very bad thing if it is given a role of idolatry in our lives! But that is a whole other post!!

So I guess now I am offering a challenge and an invitation.  First, I challenge all of you to look at being thankful in a new way this month.  I am planning on taking my own challenge too!! Be thankful DAILY in your prayers to our Lord--even before we get to the part about asking him to meet our needs.  Don't be thankful only for the GOOD things, but also be mindful about being thankful for our challenges and our hardships. .for those are what truly develop our character.  Second, I invite EVERYONE who happens along this post to place a comment, whether you believe and pray to Jesus. .or you don't--because we ALL have things to be thankful about.  The comment should address something or a few things that you are thankful for. .big or little!! My little tracking widget on the side bar tells me there are lots of people who pop in but never comment.  If you have never left a comment, just hit "comment" at the end of this post, and leave your item or items of thanksgiving, sign your name if you like, and check the anonymous circle if you don't have your own identity.  That's it.
I hope it to be a very enlightening experience to all of us, and I know that I will enjoy the opportunity to be able to be thankful for and with all of you too!

I look forward to reading about everything we have to be thankful for. .Hope you can check back too. .

  1. I am thankful for so many things. Mostly, the people in my life.

I like the month of November for reflecting. I often send actual thank you cards to people who were especially kind to us at sometime over the past year (if I hadn't already). Sometimes, when we get a little distance from an event, we see the layers of kindness more clearly. Also, what may have been a frustrating or aggravating encounter can be seen as an opportunity to grow.

I second your thankfulness for technology. I'm thankful for the garden blogging friends I've found. Nice people like you. Thanks for sharing and supporting!

  3. The list of "things" to be thankful for is so long! Would require a book. However, there are some that stand out. Thankful for the love I receive from my husband, my children, & my grandkids, the great-grandkids in our world. The opportunities to show my love for all of them. The smiles that I see on little ones faces.
For my jobs: the one that pays on Main STreet; the county volunteer position of PIO that allows me the opportunity to learn from new acquaintances around the State; the Wilmore program that allows me to meet so many performers & listeners; my church where I can help make a joyful noise to our Lord. For the soldiers who have fought & continue to serve so that I have the freedom to worship the Lord anytime & anywhere!
For the ability God gave me to sing, maybe not well, but enough to share with others. For the people I meet throughout my various endeavors. For having my dad still alive & involved in my life. For the fact that he married such a beautiful woman & made her my mom! How I miss her, but am so thankful that I had her, & she made me who I am today. For the step-mom Dad gave me 2 years ago.
Oh, my, how I could continue. I thank you Melanie, for sharing your talents of gardening, motherhood, being a friend, decorating skilss, & oh so much more. Thank you for bringing these various scriptures to "light" so that I can reflect today on more of my list!
So much more! A very thankful Thursday for sure!

  5. Good idea Mel! Today I am thankful for my family. Also, since it's Veteran's Day, I'm also thankful that I have the blessing of having my family here with me. My heart always breaks for those that are apart, and I'm thankful to them for making that sacrifice for all of us!

  6. Every single night when I lay my head down and every single morning the second I awake I thank God for my life, my husband's life and my children's life. Every day that I get to be alive is an honor, a privelege and a gift. Everything else that comes along with life is icing on the cake...the good times and the hard times. My nephew Ryan passed away 2 years ago and he was only 27 years old. He was diagnosed with cancer at 25 and fought it every day for 2 years...2 years of treatments, pain and sickness. I know what he would have given for just one more day of healthy, normal, regular old life and he couldn't have it no matter how hard he tried, wished, and prayed. It was his time to go and the Lord took him home. He is happy now and free of illness. His life and death has taught me exactly what is important and exactly what I am thankful for every day. Thank you for this post and the opportunity for me to share my story as well.

  7. Love this post! I'm still working on my grateful journal, and when I have a bad day, I force myself to write in it, and it changes my attitude quite well! And yeah, I have entries in there about hard times and dark days because there's growth there. You know what I was thankful for today? That the gloomy weather matched my mood. I know, it sounds weird, but it reminded me that it's irritating when I'm hurting and it's a bright, sunny day, and that, in turn, reminded me that when my friends hurt, they need me to meet their mood and greive or hurt with them. Like it says in the Word, to "mourn with those who mourn." Anyhoo, enjoyed your thoughts and like the festive look of your blog!

  8. Since today is my youngest's birthday, I will start with I am thankful for 3 healthy kids. This is a good challenge, because I tend to be thankful for the same things and don't look outside the box at all of my other blessings good and bad.

  9. It ain't thursday, but i'm thankful for so many things. What a blessing to enjoy your blog and be directed in my thoughts to Christ, the one who redeemed this onery brat and changed him into some one who can share his glory with others. I'm also thankful for my awsome wife who completes me in so many ways, my lovely children, for the joy of wonderful friends, and my church. I'm thankful for the beauty of God's creation, how the trees and frost display it anew each morning, along with the sun sets each evening. I am thankful for joy, peace, and God's word. DJ
